The MOPITT Version 9 CO product: sampling enhancements and validation

Abstract. Characteristics of the Version 9 (V9) MOPITT (Measurements Pollution in Troposphere) satellite retrieval product for tropospheric carbon monoxide (CO) are described. The new V9 includes many CO retrievals over land which, previous versions, would have been discarded by cloud detection algorithm. Globally, number daytime has increased 30 %–40 % relative to 8 product, although increase coverage exhibits significant geographical variability. Areas benefiting from improved performance include (but not limited to) source regions often characterized high aerosol concentrations. also incorporates a modified calibration strategy near-infrared (NIR) channels, resulting greater temporal consistency NIR-only and thermal-infrared–near-infrared (TIR–NIR) variants. Validation results based on situ profiles acquired aircraft variety contexts indicate that biases typically within range ±5 generally comparable V8 product.
